The LGBT Bar Association New York condemns President Trump’s latest “plan” to implement his tweet banning transgender military service.

Current military regulations allow transgender people to serve their country in our armed forces. What’s more, there are several lawsuits challenging Trump’s discriminatory trans military ban. So far, Trump is on a 0–6 losing streak. That means this “plan’ has absolutely no immediate effect.

But the injury is still profound.

Our federal government continues its unjustified attack on transgender Americans. These brave members of our community are willing to give their lives in service to our county. They fight for us, and we fight proudly beside them.

We also stand with our sibling organizations who are challenging this hateful “plan” in federal courts across the country. So far Trump has lost six times in court. Perhaps the federal judges in these cases are too polite to say so, but the clear import of their opinions in this litigation is that Trump lied in his original tweet when he said that his decision was made “after consultation with my Generals and military experts.” To date, neither the president nor anybody speaking for him has actually identified any “military experts” or “Generals” who were consulted before the president decided to take this action.

The New York City Bar Association’s LGBT Rights and Military Affairs and Justice Committees put out a very detailed report only this month detailing the history of the issue and supporting open transgender military service.

Trump’s trans military ban is needlessly cruel, and totally un-American.

The LGBT Bar of NY has written extensively about this Administration’s defeat in each of the federal court cases challenging this discriminatory action. You can read about the court victories here.
