State law protects all LGBTQ New Yorkers from conversion therapy. The City Council’s effort to repeal the NYC ban is best for the community.
This year, because of the hard work of LGBT advocates and our members, New York finally passed a statewide law banning the life-threatening practice of conversion therapy.
Thanks to the New York law and existing state and local consumer protection laws, every LGBTQ New Yorker will continue to have legal recourse against this fraudulent and life-threatening practice.
LeGaL, LGBTQ advocates, and survivors across NYC thank Speaker Corey Johnson for his leadership as the City Council mover to repeal the City law. Repeal avoids unnecessary and costly litigation, brought by an anti-LGBT hate group, without impacting the protections of LGBTQ New Yorkers against this barbaric and inhumane practice.
We support this step to save the City valuable resources that can otherwise be used to address the needs of LGBTQ residents.
