In New York, we are all immigrants.
The LGBT Bar Association of NY is appalled by reports that Immigration agents are being told it is official U.S. government policy to capture and detain undocumented immigrants in federal, state and local courthouses.
The new guidelines were reportedly formalized by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week.
It is reprehensible and dangerous to use courts as bait to target vulnerable people.
As Governor Cuomo said in his State of the State address:
New York State and this nation were founded on the premise that we are all created equal… we will continue our legacy of protecting the rights and freedoms of all New Yorkers so that they have the opportunity to succeed and contribute to our state’s cultural and economic strength.
We agree with California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye asked ICE to stay out of the California’s courts:
Courthouses should not be used as bait in the necessary enforcement of our country’s immigration laws.
The LGBT Bar Association of New York strongly condemns this cruel and unjust practice. No one should be discouraged from seeking justice in our courts.
