LeGaL Receives Grant From Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Tie The Knot In Support Of Its Free Legal Services For LGBTQ+ New Yorkers
In supporting the operating costs of LeGaL’s legal services, Tie The Knot is ensuring LGBTQ+ New Yorkers can assert their rights regardless of their income.
The LGBT Bar Association of New York (“LeGaL”) is pleased to announce Tie The Knot recently awarded the LeGaL Foundation a one-time grant to help support the ongoing costs of operating its free, walk-in clinics.
In 2018, LeGaL held over 100 free, walk-in legal clinic sessions to advise LGBTQ+ New Yorkers of all ages, including youth experiencing homelessness or other housing insecurities. The clinics provide holistic legal services across many practice areas, including family law, employment discrimination, housing, and immigration. It is anticipated that LeGaL will receive over 2,200 requests for legal assistance in 2019 through its helpline, website, and various clinics.
Brett Figlewski, LeGaL’s Legal Director, commended the grant from Tie The Knot to support LeGaL’s free legal services, “I am immensely grateful for the generosity of Tie The Knot to support our various legal services for the community. LGBT New Yorkers continue to turn to LeGaL as a primary source of information, legal advice, referrals, and representation, and this grant makes our work to achieve full recognition, protection, and justice possible.”
Since its founding in 2012, Tie The Knot has donated over $500,000 to various organizations that work tirelessly everyday to ensure every individual is treated equally and with dignity. LeGaL is honored to join Tie The Knot’s distinguished list of beneficiaries.
