45 Reasons I Resist the 45th President During LGBT Pride Month

  1. Trump’s Trans Military Ban: On July 26, Trump’s tweet announced a ban on all military service by transgender individuals. This was formalized in August with an official policy.
  2. DACA: AG Jeff Sessions announced the end of the DACA program that provided some protection against deportation for undocumented immigrant youth. 75K are LGBT.
  3. Justice Gorsuch: We were promised a “Justice in the Mold of Scalia.” What we got was an anti-LGBT Justice to the right of Alito.
  4. Title IX Guidance: The Education and Justice Departments withdrew two federal agency letters issued during the Obama Administration interpreting the statute Title IX to require allowing transgender students to use facilities consistent with their gender identity.
  5. Masterpiece Cakeshop: The Trump Administration decided to weigh in with in the SCOTUS case with an amicus brief and successfully sought to participate in the oral argument on behalf of the anti-gay baker.
  6. License to Discriminate EO: Early in May 2017, Trump signed an Executive Order intended to loosen up any restrictions imposed by federal law on the activities of religious organizations in the political sphere.
  7. Persecution against LGBT people in Chechnya: Apart from U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, the Trump Administration has been largely silent on the anti-gay persecution in Chechnya.
  8. Ending HIV/AID Advisory Council: In December, the Trump administration fires all members of HIV/AIDS advisory council
  9. Title VII workplace discrimination: Sessions issued a memo to all U.S. Attorneys and Heads of Department Components on October 4, 2017 that Title VII does not prohibit discrimination based on gender identity per se.
  10. EEOC Nominees: Trump’s picks have been bad news for LGBT people. In October, 2017, the EEOC ended a three-year investigation into a Title VII discrimination claim by a transgender faculty member at JFK University in California.
  11. Opposition to sexual orientation protection under federal law: The Trump Administration, speaking through AG Jeff Sessions, outspokenly opposes applying Title VII to such claims, and sought to go on record in a 2nd Circuit case.
  12. Withdrawing protection for LGBT seniors: The U.S. Dept of Human Services published a notice in the Federal Register on October 4, withdrawing a rule proposed by the Obama that would ensure proper treatment of LGBT seniors residing in facilities participating in these federal health care programs.
  13. Dropping #HB2 Case: One case challenging NC’s discriminatory H.B. 2 was led by the Obama Justice Department, and the Trump Administration signaled early in March its intention to drop that case — which it did.
  14. Nominating Betsy Devos to DoE: Her family was notorious for giving substantial financial support to anti-LGBT organizations. She has supported Focus on the Family.
  15. DoE rejects trans discrimination complaints: In February 2018, the Education Department officially said it would reject transgender student bathroom complaints
  16. Scrubbing LGBT from WH web: the term “LGBT” was absent from WhiteHouse.gov immediately after Inauguration Day 2017.
  17. Attorney General Jeff Sessions: Sessions has a long history of opposition to LGBT rights. He has lived up to his anti-LGBT record.
  18. Kyle Duncan’s nomination to the Fifth Circuit: Kyle Duncan has a terrible anti-tran record, specifically in his defense of the North Carolina legislature in HB2, and his defense of the school district that targeted Gavin Grimm.
  19. The “Conscience and Religious Freedom” Unit: In January 2018, HHS and OCR issued a rule announced the creation of the “Conscience and Religious Freedom” unit, which protects anyone who claims a “moral” objection to caring for LGBT people.
  20. Nomination of anti-gay Secretary of the Army: Trump nominated Mark Green to replace openly gay SoA, Eric Fanning. He was withdrawn after pressure from LGBT groups.
  21. Federal judicial nominees: Nominees Steven Grasz, Gregory Katsas, Mark Norris, Damien Schiff, John Bush, Stephen Schwartz have all demonstrated their outright contempt for LGBT people.
  22. Trump pardoned Joe Arpaio after he was convicted of criminal contempt related targeting of immigrants. This undermines the integrity of the rule of law.
  23. Betsy DeVos announced plans to undo Title IX protections for survivors of sexual assault in September, 2017
  24. Nominated Jeff “ Trans Kids are Satan’s Plan” Mateer: Jeff Mateer has a record of extreme hostility toward LGBT people. Mateer referred to transgender children as part of “Satan’s plan,” and compared same-sex marriage to bestiality.
  25. HHS issues October 2017 regulation that would permit employers and insurers to deny coverage for birth control for religious reasons.
  26. Religious Freedom Executive Order: In May, President Trump signed a “Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty” EO which will attempt to undermine LGBT rights.
  27. EO gutting protection for LGBT workers: Trump gutted Obama non-discrimination protections in employment among federal contractors.
  28. Nomination of Eric S. Dreiband: Trump’s pick for Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division has worked to undo protections for LGBT people and other vulnerable populations.
  29. Restricting CDC from saying: “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based” in any budget docs.
  30. Nomination of Tom Price to HHS: Price has made good on his promise to undo protections under the ACA, which protects LGBT people and everyone with HIV.
  31. DOJ refuses to appeal court order banning HHS from enforcing prevent trans people’s rights from health care discrimination under the ACA.
  32. No LGBT in the Census: The next census will not include questions about sexual orientation and gender identity.
  33. Eliminating the adoption tax credit in the Tax Reform bill. This has a disproportionate impact on low income s-s couples.
  34. DHS “Protecting the Homeland” Memos: From discouraging asylum to building new detention facilities, these memos will harm LGBT immigrants.
  35. Travel Ban: On Jan. 27, Trump signed an executive order that prohibited citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US and baring refugees from Syria.
  36. Trump did not acknowledge June as LGBT Pride Month.
  37. Trump did not acknowledge LGBT people on World AIDS Day.
  38. HUD announced it would withdraw 2 proposed policies designed to protect LGBT people experiencing homelessness.
  39. Trump’s budget proposal would gut funding for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.
  40. The DoE withdrew its finding that an Ohio school district discriminated against a trans girl.
  41. Two anti-LGBT hate groups were included in the U.S. delegation to the UN’s 61st annual Commission on the Status of Women conference.
  42. The DOJ and DOL cancelled quarterly conference calls with LGBT organizations.
  43. DOJ announces it would a rolling back of several civil rights settlement agreements with police.
  44. HUD deletes links to several important LGBT resources from its website in March. These included info for emergency homeless shelters.
  45. Trump Fails to denounce far-right extremists: Trump decried ‘hatred, bigotry and violence from many sides’ after Charlottesville, not specifically of white supremacists.
